Sinners in the hands of an angry God:
John 3:16"The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect, over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked; his wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else, but to be cast into the fire; he is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in his sight; you are ten thousand times so abominable in his eyes as the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours. You have offended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince: and yet 'tis nothing but his hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment: 'tis to be ascribed to nothing else, that you did not go to hell the last night; that you was suffered to awake again in this world, after you closed your eyes to sleep: and there is no other reason to be given why you have not dropped into hell since you arose in the morning". Romans 5:6
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for
the ungodly.
Romans 5:8
Ephesians 2:4-5
2 Thessalonians 2:16
Romans 5:18
2 Peter 3:9
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
made us alive with Christ even when
we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his
grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,
Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men,
so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings
life for all men.
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is
patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to
repentance.
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an
atoning sacrifice for our sins.
It is quite apparent that Jonathan Edwards and the God of the Bible have opposing philosophies.
It is not the sinner that God hates, it is the sin. The sinner who will not repent is like a much loved family pet who contracts rabies and must be annihilated to protect the rest from being destroyed by the disease. God cannot allow sin to continue, it is even more destructive than rabies and eventually destroys everything and everyone around it. When sin and unrepentant sinners have been annihilated then there will be no more sadness, tears, pain, or death. It was sin that brought these things into existence.
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no
more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed
away."
What is the "old order of things"? Sin and Death of course.
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned—
Romans 7:11
For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived
me, and through the commandment put me to death.
Romans 7:13
Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in
order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death
in me through what was good, so that through the commandment
sin might become utterly sinful.
Romans 8:2
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free
from the law of sin and death.
1 Corinthians 15:21
For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
1 Corinthians 15:26
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
1 Corinthians 15:54
When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with
immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has
been swallowed up in victory."
1 Corinthians 15:56
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
Hebrews 2:14
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that
by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that
is, the devil—
1 Corinthians 15:54-56
When
the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with
immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been
swallowed up in victory."["Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O
death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is
the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
